At Hi Money, we have observed that money is never just about maths. It’s about the stories we’ve inherited, the systems we live within, and the relationships that shape our choices.

We commissioned Cogo to deliver the Rich in Context report - a study of 1,150 Australians and New Zealanders that looks at the social, cultural, and psychological factors that drive financial behaviour.

This research shows that financial outcomes are not just the result of individual effort, they are the product of systems, norms, and opportunities that either enable or constrain people’s financial agency.

It highlights that money is deeply relational, and that trauma, whether from early experiences, relationships, or systemic disadvantage, profoundly shapes how people feel about and interact with money. The findings show that many people require nuanced support and understanding to navigate financial decisions with confidence.

Our hope is that Rich in Context encourages business, government, and community leaders to view financial wellbeing through a culture and gender lens. By doing so, they have the opportunity to design policies, workplaces, products, and services that genuinely support people’s financial wellbeing, and empower more people to engage with money confidently and openly.
